Social Injustice Highlighted at Silverdocs Film Festival

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The above image depicts Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the day of his funeral.  I see this image and simply experience a feeling of disgust towards the number of senseless of deaths in our community.  The death of Dr. King was a saddened occasion while at the same time an honorable act of continued courage by a man who fought for civil rights for all Americans.  The caption “Forgive them father, for they know not what they do” speaks volume to the lack of leadership in our community. We must consider the impact that a leader/activist of the caliber as Dr. King would have in today’s society.  Perhaps our youth and young adults would have purpose and a movement to be a part of.

Switzerland

This image was taken from a train ride in Switzerland and is an ideal reflection of the simplistic ways of life.  There is a presence of peace and serenity that exerts from this land.  Again would this environment change the way we carry ourselves and cared for our community?  I was thinking that perhaps if we began to introduce our children to other sites of the world it will be less likely that one will fight for a street corner on the westend of Louisville.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

We sometimes take our blessings for granted by not considering what others may not have.  Some say that they have nothing (job or money) and use this as an excuse to commit criminal acts against each other.  I see these images and remember the spirit of peace that I felt when visiting.  A people who by looks of the environment have every reason to be hostile, violent or criminal are the opposite.  The negative or “lack of” has evolved a community of togetherness and dedication to one another.  What makes their reaction so different from ours?
If we don’t have, we steal and sometimes kill.
If you are not in my “class”, I’ll just walk pass.
Perhaps, if we educate of ourselves of the worldly struggles we will see this is not a personal attack to keep us down it’s a challenge to bring us closer together.

Vienna, Austria

Approximately 4800 miles away from the town of Louisville, KY there is a family that wakes up every morning to a town enriched with palaces, waterfalls and all the bells and whistles of royalty.  These images would cause one to wonder if our surroundings play an integral part in how we live our life and our appreciation for our community.  If you were reminded daily of your royal ancestry perhaps you would walk a little taller, speak confidently and exert all of the character traits associated with your history.

What's your opinion? How does these images speak to you?
